Plasterer in Kilmarnock for Old, Modern and Commercial Buildings
Plastering Services from Our Plasterers in Kilmarnock
Looking for experienced plasterers in Kilmarnock? Decor Home & Business plasters and repairs walls and ceilings in every type of property, from stone-built period homes to modern flats and shops. The age of a building tells you a lot about what is behind its walls. A stone-built house from the 1800s, a 1970s semi and a modern flat are all plastered differently, and repairing them with the wrong materials causes cracking, damp patches or finishes that never quite sit flat. That is why we start every Kilmarnock job by looking at how the property was built.
Decor Home & Business has 20 years of plastering experience and is fully insured. We take on all property types and give free written quotes, so you know exactly what the work covers before deciding. This page covers plastering only; for painting and wallpapering, visit our decorator in Kilmarnock page.
Property type 1
Older Solid-Wall and Period Properties
Traditional buildings with solid stone or brick walls need to breathe. Covering them in modern gypsum can trap moisture, so where it suits the wall we use lime plaster instead. If a wall shows signs of damp, the cause has to be fixed first; plastering over it only hides the problem for a while.
Period homes often have lath-and-plaster ceilings. When these sag, crack or have been soaked by a leak, we take back the unsound sections, repair or replace them, and finish the surface flat again. Decorative coving and cornice can be repaired, matched or replaced, keeping the character of the room.
Property type 2
Post-War and Modern Homes
Houses built from the 1950s onwards usually have gypsum plaster or plasterboard, and many still carry artex ceilings. Textured coatings are tested for asbestos before anything is removed. Any loose texture is taken off first, then the ceiling is prepared and skimmed smooth.
For walls in reasonable shape, a skim coat covers old repairs, hairline cracks and marks from stripped wallpaper. Where plaster has blown or crumbled, we carry out full replastering, building up with a float coat and finishing with a setting coat. Dry-lining is a good option for uneven walls or when a room is being reconfigured, and on extensions we plaster so the new rooms match the original house.
Property type 3
Rental Properties Between Tenancies
Landlords and letting agents usually have a short gap between tenants. Holes from fixings, damaged corners and patched walls can be repaired quickly so the property is ready to redecorate. Send photos of the damage by WhatsApp and we can tell you what is involved before visiting.
Property type 4
Shops, Offices and Other Business Premises
Commercial work needs careful timing. We plan each job to reduce disruption to your business, use access equipment for high walls and stairwells, and sheet the areas we work in. We are also used to following other trades, so we can come in after electricians, joiners or builders have finished.
Property type 5
External Rendering and Harling
Outside walls take the brunt of Ayrshire weather. We apply and repair render and harling on exterior walls, helping protect the masonry and giving the building a tidy, even finish.
Plastering in Kilmarnock: Your Questions
Should my older house be plastered with lime?
If it has solid walls of traditional construction, lime is often the better choice because it lets moisture escape. We will check the walls and recommend the right material.
Is my artex ceiling safe to remove?
We test textured coatings for asbestos before any removal, then decide whether to remove the texture or skim over it.
Can you get a rental flat ready before the next tenant?
Yes. Send photos by WhatsApp and we will plan the repairs around your tenancy dates.
Is dry-lining better than replastering?
It depends on the wall. Dry-lining suits very uneven or reconfigured walls; replastering suits walls that just need a new surface. We explain the options in your quote.
What happens when the job is finished?
We clean up and do a final walk-round check with you, so you can see every area before we leave.
